With such a wealth of nature walks in Ireland, and with the continued investment of Bord Fáilte in Themed Looped Walks, it seems like a very straight forward step to encourage more Irish people to get out and get walking. A new designated day in September to encourage outdoor activities has just been launched, and it is expected that people numbering in the tens of thousands will take part in outdoor nature walks. The initiative is from a number of Governmental departments.

“The event is being organised to create an awareness of the trail network that is provided by many organisations free for all to enjoy,” said a spokesperson for Mr Ó Cuív.

There has been €1.5million allocated for spending on outdoor recreational activities, of which €350,000 has already been spent by Fáilte Ireland on Themed Looped Walks throughout the country. By the end of 2008, there will be over 100 looped walkers in 26 counties.

When it comes to spending money on holidays, the car rental in Ireland is going to be one of the most significant outlays. While the car rental industry in Ireland is very competitive, there are a number of key steps that will make sure you get the best deal and protect yourself from the pitfalls of renting a car. Added to these pitfalls are the facts that you will be in a strange country and the possibly getting used to driving on the other side of the road. All of these problems are easily dealt with by having some prior knowledge and planning.

Things worth Knowing Before You Rent

Car rental companies compete on price first and foremost and therefore the lower the price is, the more likely you are to book. Add into the mix the multitude of car rental brokers who are also bidding for your business. The matter is further complicated by the differences between inclusive and exclusive insurance rates and the geographic location from where you are booking your car. With all of this in mind, it is not hard to understand why the normal person booking their car can get easily confused.

When looking to book your car, you should decide what type of insurance you want and make sure that all the rates you are comparing include the basic insurances, CDW, 3rd Party and theft protection.

In the Irish car rental market among all the major companies, CDW is included as standard. SDW (Super Damage Waiver) which reduces your risk by removing the excess is available for an additional cost at the time of picking up the car. Many brokers will quote without this basic CDW insurance, so while it looks like you are getting a great deal, you will need to purchase insurance on top of your basic cost for renting the car.

Paul Redmond from the Car Rental Council of Ireland said:

“Many people are trying to hire cars ‘on the cheap without proper waivers and insurance’. He says that there are a lot of small-time and large-scale brokers operating online which are driving down the top-line prices but they sell very spartan deals which create a false sense of expectation amongst customers.”

One other major consideration when taking into account the insurance options is the fact that CDW covers everybody inside and outside of the car in the case of an accident, except for the driver. The car rental companies in Ireland recommend that you have private travel or health insurance to cover yourself. Some car rental companies will offer a personal accident insurance to fill this void. CDW covers car in the event of a crash or accidental damage – (with an excess). 3rd party cover (mandatory) therefore included in all rates (inclusive or exclusive covers all parties except the driver).

While Picking Up the Car

There are a number of items to bear in mind while picking up the car to safe guard yourself against additional charges. The first tip is the make sure that you check the car carefully for damage. The rental agents may have already noted down damage to the vehicle, but it is important you double check this. If you miss something that gets detected upon return of the vehicle, you will be charged for it.

The car will probably have a full tank of fuel when you pick it up. You will be given the choice to either buy the fuel from the car rental company and return the car empty, or return the car full. It is much easier to return the car full than judge bringing the car back empty. Make sure to also check the amount of fuel in the car matches what is noted down as being in the car. If you want to take extra caution, take photographs of the car, particularly the wheels and windscreen which are not covered by insurance. This gives you the proof to back up your story if some damage is attributed to you wrongly.

Retuning the Car

There are a number of key factors to keep in mind when bringing back the car. The easiest one is to make sure you bring the car back full of fuel if you decided not to buy the tank of petrol. The cost for refuelling the car at the car rental agency will far exceed the cost of filling the car at a regular petrol station.

It is important to check in the car with the car rental firm and get your contract signed by a rental agent as having no damage. Once you have this form signed you have officially handed the responsibility of the car back to the car rental firm. If you depart without getting your form signed, the car remains in your responsibility until the car rental firm closes the rental.

A recent fault at Dublin Airport brought the capacity of Ireland’s main airport to just 65%. This fault caused delays to thousands of passengers and disrupted many flights to and from the airport. Airlines such as Ryanair and Aer Lingus had to cancel many flights over numerous days while the airport struggled to return to full functionality.

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) said that there was a glitch in the radar hardware. The apologies by the IAA for the delays ring hollow when as it turned out this problem was weeks old, and has been the fifth radar problem since the radar was installed in 2005. Added to this disaster is the fact that the IAA has no back up options… one radar for one country.

While delays like this are the exception rather than the rule, there are a number of steps which can be taken to reduce the strain of having to travel through an airport while still fulfilling the necessary requirements of the airline. The DAA recommends that you arrive 90 minutes before your flight is due to depart. Some of these tips are very straight forward and deal with your normal every day journey through Dublin Airport, but no matter how prepared you, delays such as those at Dublin Airport recently can leave you helpless and stranded.

1 - Arrive in plenty of time and get checked in for your flight as soon as possible. While that is a simple matter for those of us living in Dublin, tourists who may be traveling from further afield will have the extra complications of having to drop back a car rental, checking out of hotels etc. The budget airlines at Dublin Airport work mostly off a self service check in kiosk which makes the whole process of getting your boarding card very quick. If you are traveling long distance from Dublin Airport, it is suggest you arrive 3 hours before your departure.

2 - Once checked in, it is important to run the security check gauntlet as soon as possible. This process be anything between mundane and horrific depending on how busy the airport is and how many security check gates are open. It is important to know the security requirements regarding what you can and can’t bring on the plane. For more information click here.

3 - After passing through security, you will be in the old duty free shopping area. There are a good variety of shops and products here for last minute gifts and for treating yourself from everything to a cup of coffee to a new camera. There is good value to be had here, particularly if you buy items in bigger sizes. If your flight is delayed, here is the place to try and waste some time.

4 - The food court is good but expensive in Dublin Airport. It would be nice to think expensive means good quality, but I’m afraid not. Everything from sandwiches and coffees to a full meal is available here.

5 - Internet access can be found throughout the airport either by using the computers provided or the wireless service provided by Dublin Airport.

6 - For those wishing to enjoy a bit more comfort during their stay at the airport, there is a passenger lounge available from 0530 till 1900 daily (The Anna Livia Departure Lounge). This offers complimentary refreshments, magazines, newspapers and a business centre with free internet access. If you are going to be delayed for any period of time, this may be the place for you.

7 - The last place for waiting for your flight is the departure lounges. They have a generous supply of seats for passengers waiting to board planes. The area can get busy just before a plane is due to board, but sitting here and reading a book is an excellent way to spend your time waiting for your flight to depart.

Dublin Airport is working hard to expand and cope with the ever increasing passenger numbers. There is a number of facilities not mentioned here available to all passengers. These include: Currency & Banking services, Left Luggage, Meet & Greet, Baby Changing Facilities and reduced mobility facilities.

[Digg] The long awaited opening of the bypass around Moate and Kilbeggan opened yesterday (16 July 08). This new bypass removes several bottlenecks from the route and could shorten the length of the journey by 45 minutes at peak times. It is forecasted that this new road will remove up to 10,000 vehicles a day from the various towns and villages that are bypassed.

Construction on the €280m project began two years ago and was completed on budget and on time. The new section of road is currently a dual carriageway, but will be upgraded to motorway standard and is 29km long. This new section is part of the planned upgrading of the entire route between Dublin and Galway which is due to be completed in 2010. The Minister for Transport, Mr Dempsey, opened the road yesterday.

Annual figures for incidents of crime involving tourists have just been released. During 2007 there were 315 incidents of crime against tourists involving 574 tourists. The main crime committed against tourists was theft from person with 50% of all crimes being in this category with theft from cars in second place. Of the thefts against cars, 77% of these cars were owned by car rental companies in Ireland.

Dublin was the main focus of crime against tourists with 74% of all crimes reported to Garda stations in Dublin, followed by Garda stations in Galway, Cork, Kerry and Clare respectively. Cases involving violent crime grew from 14 cases in 2006 to 20 in 2007.

The majority of crimes occurred while tourists were engaging in mainly tourist activity such as sightseeing, shopping and while in restaurants and cafes. The report highlighted that crimes against tourists were most likely to be committed between the times of 1400 and 1800 and the victims were most likely to be females aged between 17 and 24.

ITAS is a nationwide service which provides free support to tourists who are victims to crime. The offices of the ITAS are open seven days a week and can be contacted on 01 4785292 between 1000 and 1800 Monday to Friday, and 1200 to 1800 on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Hertz car rental are one of the largest providers of car rentals in the Irish market. Hertz have many locations throughout Ireland: Cork Airport, Donegal Airport, Dublin Airport, Dublin City, Galway Airport, Kerry Airport, Knock Airport, Shannon Airport, Sligo Airport, Waterford Airport and Rosslare Ferryport. While the website is nicely laid out, there are a number of interesting features including the online check in and the rent a green collection car.

The online check in feature allows you to check in for your car online which in turn would allow you to pick up the car quicker. This option is restricted to #1 Club members. The ‘Rent a Green Collection Car‘ feature is a nice touch. Car rental companies traditionally struggle to minimize their effect on the environment due to the nature of the business they are in, but giving people the option to book environmentally responsible cars is a nice feature. Cars offered within the green collection are decided based on a formula and weighted CO2 output levels.

The Hertz website, while feature rich is a carbon copy of the Hertz.com website and as such can be hard to navigate. In essence the website is an Irish version of the hertz.com website, but this brings about several issues. For example, if you wanted to select a location from the many Hertz have in Ireland, you would have to know the address, airport code, or have to pick Ireland from a list of countries. For me, this just makes the process of getting information overly complicated. Three steps could be removed from this process and it would be easier to use.

This issue is replicated over and over throughout the website. One would think if you were on Hertz.ie, the car rental booking engine would be set up for Ireland. As we know from above, Hertz have locations in Rosslare Ferryport, but the input allowed is for areas with an airport code only. If I search for Rosslare Ferryport, the website is unable to find a location. If I navigate through the locations list under Ireland and select Rosslare Ferryport, and select that particular location for a rental, I’m and told to refer to “Rental Qualifications & requirements for After Hours.”

As Hertz is one of largest car rental companies in Ireland, other people must not find the same issues as I do with their website. I however, would of long ago moved on to another service provider at my chosen location.

10 - Guinness Storehouse

Few people of legal age visit Ireland without taking a sample of a pint of Guinness. Guinness was first brewed by Arthur Guinness at St James’s Gate in the heart of Dublin in the style of a porter. Guinness is famous for its deep black colour and white head and is one of Ireland’s most famous exports. Today Guinness is one of the most successful beer brands globally. Guinness has been brewed at Saint James’s Gate since Arthur Guinness first came up with the recipe.

The Guinness Storehouse in Dublin celebrates Ireland’s most famous export from the heart of the St James Gate Brewery in Dublin City. This highlight is one of the biggest attractions in Ireland with over 4 million visitors since 2000 when the Storehouse first opened. The storehouse is a self guided tour with takes in the region of an hour and a half. The tour offers many highlights over seven floors, all surrounding a glass atrium which takes the shape of a pint of Guinness which extends from the reception to The Gravity Bar. 8 - The Burren

Located in north Clare and south Galway, The Burren is a must for any visitor to Ireland. It is easily the most unique and interesting landscape in Ireland, if not Europe, and combines distinctive limestone rock formations with rare species of flora and fauna. The Burren’s name is derived from the Gaelic word Boireann, which means rocky place. Its unique appearance is the result of thousands of years of the erosion of limestone by acidic rainwater which left ruts and hollows between the rock surfaces.

Always a favourite with hikers, The Burren has a well trodden walking trail that takes in the region comfortable 45 kilometres. As well as its stunning beauty, The Burren has long been a Mecca for naturalists. Its ecological diversity can not be found anywhere else in Europe with over 700 different species of plants and ferns growing there. Throughout the year, and especially between April and October, the flowers and plants provide an unlikely explosion of colour among the grey rocks. A remarkable seventy five percent of Irish native species grow in the Burren and it amazingly supports arctic, tropical and alpine plants in its 360 square kilometre area.

7 - Dublin Pub Crawl

The pub is an important part of Irish life, and everywhere you go in Ireland you will see public houses. The connection between the Irish Pub and the arts, in particular literary arts is very strong. In Dublin City Centre there is a large concentration of pubs with connections to famous literary and musical figures.

The Dublin Literary Pub Crawl is probably the most famous of the Dublin pub crawls and leaves from Duke Street nightly. The tour covers a distance of less than 1km in total and takes approximately 2.25 hours to complete. Along the way performances are held which feature Joyce, Beckett, Behan, Lavin, Wide, Boland and Meehan. The tour features 8 pubs in total (4 pubs per tour) and always contains a detour through Trinity College.

The Traditional Irish Music Pub Crawl explores the traditional music scene in Dublin. The tour is accompanied by traditional Irish musicians who play at a variety of locations along the way. The tour is mainly focused in Temple Bar and departs Oliver St.John Gogarty pub nightly.

6 - Newgrange

The Passage Grave of Newgrange is one of the most historically significant locations in not just Ireland, but in Europe. The Passage Tomb is only rivalled in importance by Stonehenge in Europe. The prehistoric tomb dates back to circa 3000 BC which make the tomb 400 years older than the Great Pyramids of Egypt and 1000 years older than Stonehenge. What makes Newgrange particularly special is that on the winter solstice annually, a beam of sunlight travels the length of the tomb and illuminates the floor. Newgrange is a designated World Heritage Site by UNESCO and attracts in the region of 200,000 visitors annually. Each tour takes 15 people into the tomb itself

Tours through the passage tomb use false lighting to simulate the winter solstice. For entry into the Newgrange Passage tomb during the Winter Solstice, a lottery is held each year. During 2007, 28,106 people entered the draw from which 50 names were drawn. Each winner gets awarded 2 entries into the tomb during the Winter Solstice.

5 - Cruise on the River Shannon

The River Shannon is the longest river in Ireland by far, and make for excellent cursing. The River is navigable from Limerick to the Lower Lough Erne in Northern Ireland with 500km of navigable waterways. There are a number of main centres for picking up and collecting boats along the Shannon with Portumna and Carrick on Shannon being the most popular. There can be nothing more relaxing than cruising the Shannon. Life moves at a completely different pace and the only thing one has to worry about on a day to day basis is where they want to spend the night. Everybody on the river is friendly and there are no license requirements needed to rent a cruiser.

There are two main parts to the River Shannon, the river itself and the Shannon / Erne Waterway which travels into Northern Ireland and uses a different navigational system. The most popular routes are from Portumna to Carrick on Shannon, but for those who make their way further north, many highlights can be found off the beaten track.

Cruisers come in all different shapes and sizes, from day boats which can be hired at Leitrim to 7 or 8 berth cruisers that have all the modern comforts of home. The best cruiser is medium in size and has navigational controls both inside and out. When booking a cruiser it is best to book for slightly more people than you plan to cater for in order to enjoy maximum comfort.

4 - Golfing in Ireland

Ireland has often been described as a golfer’s paradise and once you arrive in Ireland you will never be very far away from a quality golf course. The beautiful landscape, excellent choice of courses and reasonable prices has kept golfing enthusiasts coming back to Ireland again and again for years. - Ballybunion Golf Club (Old) is a stunning course situated in Co Kerry, Ireland. The course dates from 1893 and is a private members club although visitors are welcome. One of the main features of this stunning course is the lack of any obvious man made features. The challenge is such that a handicap of 24 or less for a man and a handicap of 36 or less for ladies are minimum requirements.

- Portmarnock Golf Club is located on the outskirts of Dublin in the suburb of Portmarnock and is universally acknowledged as one of the truly great links courses. The course is located on a small peninsula which extends out into the Irish Sea and is surrounded by water on three sides. If the course was not enough of a challenge in itself, the added wind from the Irish Sea can make this course very difficult to navigate.

- Lahinch Golf Club is situated on the West Coast of Ireland and within close proximity to the Cliffs of Moher. The course was built in 1892 on a vast dune land. The course has been improved several times since it opened, but the core characteristics of this stunning course sill remain strong.

3 - Dingle (Daingean Uí Chúis)

Dingle is without doubt one of the biggest tourist attractions in Ireland and combines old Irish character with the stunning natural beauty of the Dingle Peninsula. The town of Dingle sits on a natural harbour and at the foot of the Slievanea Mountain, both of which add to the natural beauty that surrounds Dingle. The town is a lively combination of shops, pubs and restaurants, all with a distinctly Irish character.

The Dingle Peninsula is the most Westerly point of both Ireland and Europe and mixes unrivaled natural beauty with the harsh weather of the Atlantic Ocean. Everywhere you look on the Dingle Peninsula, you will see the unmissable pattern of harsh weather on the landscape. The stunning Blasket Islands are situated just off the coast of the Peninsula, and can easily be seen from the mainland. 2 - Connemara

The Sky Road is an 11km long and rises to 150 meters above sea level at its highest point, Slyne Head. From Slyne Head, you can enjoy stunning views over Clifden Castle, the islands of Inishturk and Turbot and the town of Clifden itself.

In terms of things to do, the Connemara region is not short on attractions with ample opportunities to enjoy golf, cycling, pony trekking, hill walking, water sports, horse racing and camping. In recent times the Connemarathon has become a major tourist draw. This challenging marathon offers a Half Marathon, a full Marathon and an Ultra Marathon all in one day through some of the most scenic parts of Ireland.
